What is Clopidogrel?

Clopidogrel is an anti-platelet drug that works by decreasing the ability of platelets to stick together to form clots.

Uses/Indications

  • Decrease the risk for the development of blood clots in instances of feline cardiomyopathies, pulmonary hypertension, and other causes of increased clotting risk

Adverse Effects

Please contact CVCA should any of these symptoms be noted

  • Drooling secondary to bitter taste (more common in cats)
  • Decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhea most common side effects
  • Small increased risk for bleeding

Client Information

  • Best given with food to help with the taste and to avoid stomach
    upset
  • Available in tablets. Can be reformulated in chewables. Can be made into a liquid, however not recommended due to the bitter taste
  • Commonly used concurrently with aspirin
  • Does not require any specific monitoring
  • Please tell any veterinary professional that your pet is on Clopidogrel/Plavix, especially prior to any dental or surgical procedures
