Bill Tyrrel is leading the team at our Leesburg location.
Dr. Bill Tyrrell is a 1992 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. After graduation, he spent four years in small animal practice in Northern Virginia, where he became fascinated with cardiology and echocardiography. He then began a cardiology residency program at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his residency credentials with Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates (CVCA) and achieved Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in the College of Cardiology in 1999. He was a co-founder and helped expand CVCA to its present 25 plus locations across the country. He presently serves as Co-Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of CVCA and spends a good deal of his time traveling from office to office now. When seeing in-office appointments, Dr. Tyrrell strives to fully educate his clients about the cardiac disease found within their pets.
In February of 2010, he was elected President of the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and served on its Board of Directors for over 12 years. He spent two years as Virginia’s alternate delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s House of Delegates. He is a past President of the Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and the Virginia Tech (VA MD College of Veterinary Medicine/VMCVM) Veterinary School Alumni Society. He is also a past committee member of the VMCVM Veterinary Memorial Fund (10+ years). This fund exists to help pet owners and families cope with the grief associated with the passing of their loved ones and to raise funds to support scientific investigations which improve the quality of health care available for future generations. Dr. Tyrrell was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in 2003 by the VA Tech Alumni Association. In 2015, he was recognized by the VVMA as the Distinguished Virginia Veterinarian of 2015. In August of 2019, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the VA MD College of Veterinary Medicine.
He has lectured nationally at the ACVIM Forum, VMX, AVMA Convention, VVMA Annual meeting and the PVMA Keystone meeting. He was the chairperson and co-founder for the 2011 inaugural Potomac Regional Veterinary Conference held in Washington, DC, a joint scientific continuing education meeting of the VA, MD, WV and DC veterinary medical associations and has continued its planning committee for the past nine years. Bill is the past chair of ACVIM Marketing and Communications Committee (2016-2018) and the ACVIM Cardiology Residency Training Committee (2021). He is presently the Treasurer of the ACVIM and serves on the ACVIM Executive Board and Board of Regents along with serving on the Dean’s Advisory Council at the VMCVM.
Bill’s main research interest lies in giant breed cardiomyopathy in both the Irish Wolfhound (IWH) and Great Dane. He has worked with the Irish Wolfhound Foundation and the Great Dane Club of America for the past 17 years or so. His work with Irish Wolfhounds was recently published in both the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the Journal of Canine Genetics and Epidemiology.
Dr. Tyrrell lives in Leesburg, Virginia with his wife, Jen, and two daughters (one at UVA and the other a HS senior), three Maine Coon cats, Chianti, Dani, and Sarafina and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Henry.
